Pop Up Projects arrives in Paris, in style

Pop Up Projects has arrived in Paris, after many successful openings in Beirut and Dubai. This moving gallery showcases art in “an accessible experience” by local artists in the Arab region.

I had the privilege to witness the journey of Pop Up Projects, also known as Pop Up Exhibitions and formerly Pop Up Art Gallery, by the two young curators Zalfa Halabi and Lynn Modallal since 2020. Over the years, their mission has remained the same; to showcase art in what they call “an accessible experience” and to promote emerging, as well as established, artists from the region. Between 2020 and 2022, I attended their shows in Beirut, and they have also exhibited in Dubai. Now, their project has arrived in Paris, and it is a show not to be missed.

In a joint collaboration with curator Stephanie Hobeika, the Pop Up Exhibition Paris Edition 1 will open to the public tonight at 389 Laboutique Gallery in Paris (address at the bottom of the article). The artists included are painters, photographers and illustrators. They are: Semaan Khawam, Ghylan Safadi, Sara Chaar, Mansour El Habre, Fadi El Chamaa, Shawki Youssef, Celine Layous, Luana Bassil, Andrew Hraiz, Toufic Dagher, and Nour Choukeir. Also participating are Rola Abu Darwish, Salwa Eid, and Yasmina Hilal, all of whom have had solo shows earlier this year at Zalfa Halabi Art Gallery, a Beirut-based contemporary art gallery that launched in 2022.

The Parisian gallery where the exhibition is launching, 389 La Boutique Gallery, is near the Pyrénées metro station, and was founded in between the lockdowns in Paris. The gallery showcases young and emerging artists, and there is an affinity there for pop culture, design and street art. Indeed, this exhibition is a perfect collaboration between Parisian art and Beiruti art.

The Lebanese curators have put together a project that continues to evolve and reach broader audiences over time. If you are in Paris, I highly recommend for you to add this exhibition to your itinerary and show your support.

The Pop Up Exhibition Paris Edition I opens tonight September 15 at 389 Laboutique Gallery in Paris [389 Rue des Pyrénées 75020 Paris, France] and will remain on display until October 5. If in Paris, do make sure to pass by and see the show!
